On 09.07.2013 Tom Hanks has turned 57. He has been an actor for more than 40 years and is one of the greatest and most successful men in Hollywood. He is just the second actor to win the Best Actor Oscar’s Award in two consecutive years (Philadelphia – 1993 and Forrest Gump – 1994). It’s very hard to choose only five of his amazing movies, but I will try to do my best. Let’s start with the first Hanks’s film I’ve watched:
#5: Philadelphia (1993)
Tom Hanks is playing a man with AIDS who is fired because of his condition. He decides to fight back and defend his human rights in the court. Another great actor is defending him. Denzel Washington is the only lawyer who would take the case. It’s not the happiest movie in the world, but you will really feel the pain and desperation of Andrew Beckett (Hanks).
#4: Saving Private Ryan (1998)
With a score of 8,6 (by IMDb) this movie is ranked 36 of all time. It’s the best war movie I’ve ever watched. Usually, I don’t like such films, but this is one big exception. It’s about loyalty, friendship, duty and honour. A whole constellation of famous actors is participating in “Saving Private Ryan”including Mat Damon, Vin Diesel, Edward Burns and Ted Danson.
#3: The Green Mile (1999)
Tom Hanks is playing a guard in a prison who is guarding prisoners sentenced to death. One of them has a special gift that I won’ tell you anything about because I don’t want to spoil your entire experience, in case you haven’t watched the movie yet. This film is very different from anything you have seen in the theaters before. It will surprise you.
#2: Cast Away (2000)
For this role Tom Hanks had to loose and after that gain more than 20 kg. This movie is based on the true story of a FedEx employee who has survived a plane crash. He had to live all alone on a desert island in the South Pacific ocean for more than five years. Nothing will be the same when he finally returns to the civilization saved by a random ship. This is one of my favourite films of all time. You are very lucky, if you haven’t watched it yet!#1: Forrest Gump (1994)
I will never forget the words “Run, Forest, run!”. The extraordinary story of Forrest Gump is directed by one of the greatest directors of our times Robert Zemeckis. It’s very hard to describe the whole idea of this complex movie in just a few sentences. Briefly, Forrest is seeking the one and true love. Meanwhile, he has accidentally been involved in many dramatic and important moments in the history. This masterpiece won six Oscars!
